We design every skin tone and every hair texture with real care — box braids, afro puffs, locs, twists, coils, cornrows, bantu knots, straight, wavy, curly. Hair is drawn in open outlines so it's a joy to color, never a solid black blob. This is the whole reason we started doing this.

1. Order and tell us about your child. At checkout you'll share their name, age, theme, and anything that makes them them — the sneakers they won't take off, the stuffed animal that goes everywhere, their best friend's name.

2. Upload a photo (optional, but magical). One clear, well-lit photo is all we need. We'll design a stylized cartoon character inspired by them — not a photo tracing, but a character they'll recognize instantly as themselves.

3. Approve your proof. We send you the cover and a sample page to review before we finish the book. One round of revisions is included, free.

4. We deliver. Files to your inbox, or finished books to your door.

Every digital purchase includes a Personal Print Release:

Your purchase includes a personal-use license to print unlimited copies of your custom book for your own family, party, or classroom — at home or at any print shop. Commercial use, resale, redistribution, or sharing of the digital files is not permitted. Your custom design remains the property of Shades of You.

Print one, or print thirty. It's your child's book — use it as much as you like.

A little note on likeness

We create a stylized cartoon character inspired by your child — think animated movie, not portrait painting. It captures their hairstyle, features, skin tone and spirit in a fun, kid-friendly art style. We'll always send a proof first, and we won't finish the book until you love it.

By uploading a photo you're confirming you're the parent or guardian of the child pictured. Photos are used only to design your book and are deleted once your order is complete. We never resell, reuse, or publicly share a custom design — your child's book belongs to your family alone.
